Gaming Addiction

Gaming applications. I have a gaming addiction. There I said it, I am out and proud.

I remember my dad bringing home the Nintendo that very first Christmas it came out. I have been hooked ever since. You may asking yourself what changes this has brought into the mix of my behavior. Well, it's rewired it. I am ashamed to admit it but the first thing I do after getting up in the morning (and yes before I even get dressed, eat or brush my teeth) is to jump onto my computer and get a quick gaming fix. Instead of staying on topic and completing a task online, I will bounce back and forth between topic and game play. If I feel overwhelmed in a research topic or balancing my check book I switch up my screens, get a game fix, then revert back to my original task.

I use gaming technology to decompress, relax and for general enjoyment. However, there is a dark side to my gaming addiction. It has cost me valuable hours that can be best utilized elsewhere. I have used gaming as an escape and to block real life responsibilities.  Recently I have began curbing my addiction by forcing myself to focus my attention to the important things once again. People.

  1. Jeniese I like how you have used a form a technology that most people don't think about. I think we all have our battles with technology and how it makes us feel. I personally have a small addiction to candy crush and I'm ashamed to admit that during my son's naptime that is where you can find me. Without even realizing it I have spent an hour and a half playing a game and nothing got accomplished around my house. That's really good though that you realized you were spending too much time on gaming and now you are trying to control that urge!

  2. I'm sure you are not the only one who is ashamed to say they are addicted to some form of technology. I got in a huge gaming slump a while back myself. It was all I'd do at night. Instead of watching television or talking with my family, I'd be playing a game. Sometimes I'd play on my smart phone while talking to my wife. Horrible isn't it? It just shows how dependent we are all becoming on technology whether for work or pleasure.

  3. I do not think that it is silly to comment on gaming being a very addictive form of technology. Honestly I think it night me one of the most if not most addictive form. I am a proud and proclaimed gamer. To say something in your defense, I don't think you can play too many video games any more than you can read too many books or admire too much art. They are an art form to be enjoyed and appreciated.

  4. Jeniese, thank you for sharing your personal struggles with gaming, and kudos for striving to address them. I'm so glad you've chosen a topic that will be directly and personally relevant to you.

  5. Jeniese-
First of all the picture that you used is cracking me up. That is a picture of my nine year old with his Xbox controller for sure. Way to go on admitting that you have a gaming problem but it’s really no worse than someone always being on Twitter or Facebook. Just remember everyone has something that they are addicted to. Good Job!
